Writer's Digest And Me

     So, I guess I didn't place in the top 25 of Writer's Digest's Short Short Story Contest. As of last week I am getting SPAM emails from them advertising books and conferences. I think when they decided on the winners, they released their ads to the losers. Their rule guidelines state that if you haven't received anything from them in the mail (mailbox, not e-mail) by Valentine's Day, then you are a loser. So, technically, I have until Monday to be officially defeated and depressed, but something tells me they have already chosen the winners. But, hey, I like my story, so after the mailman races past my mailbox on Monday, I am submitting the story elsewhere. It really is that good. Really really.

Happy Birthday to...Me

Another year and I find myself having grown a little older. Yes, I am now considered to be in my mid-thirties. I am now officially 34 years old. That seems so old to me and I only know how closer 40 is...and how I will wish I were turning 34 instead of 40 when that day comes.
     All in all it was a decent day. I don't know why I always expect my birthday to be something of glamor and excitement, but I always do, just like Christmas Day. These two days never quite hit the mark, but I love them both anyway.
     For this year, I wish to have something published, or at least awarded a special prize of distinction. Something in which I can prove I am a writer. A good one, at that.
     I also wish to lose enough weight where my current jeans size will be so enormous on my athletic frame that it will be quite shocking.
     Don't worry:  these weren't what I wished for when I blew out my candles at my mom's house...even though my daughter guessed what that one was. I have many other secret wishes, don't you fret.

Newest Zodiac Sign

     Now I'm a....Capricorn?!
     With the latest discovery of a 13th Zodiac sign, I, like I am sure many other American citizens, am flabbergasted. Having been born on January 30 and always thinking I was an Aquarius, I am now being told as I near my 34th year on this planet under the celestial stars that I am, in fact, a Capricorn.
     Here is the new breakdown that some astrologers have always been privy to and believe as accurate:

ARIES = APRIL 19 - MAY 13
TAURUS = MAY 14 - JUNE 19
GEMINI = JUNE 20 - JULY 20
CANCER = JULY 21 - AUG 9
LEO = AUGUST 10 - SEPTEMBER 15
VIRGO = SEPTEMBER 16 - OCTOBER 30
LIBRA = OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 22
SCORPIO = NOVEMBER 23 - NOVEMBER 29
OPHIUCHUS = NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 17
SAGITTARIUS = DECEMBER 18 - JANUARY 18
CAPRICORN = JANUARY 19 - FEBRUARY 15
AQUARIUS = FEBRUARY 16 - MARCH 11
PISCES = MARCH 12 - APRIL 18

     This means everyone in my family has a new astrological sign. I don't know if I can cope with that. Did we not all notice that Scorpio (my son's new sign) only covers 7 days? I guess if you ever share a birthday with the American Thanksgiving you are now partnered with the astrological spider..
     I don't know what to think of this. I has always cried out, "This is my song!" when Fifth Dimension's "Age of Aquarius" played on the radio and on TV. Does this mean I am no longer relatable to it? I don't read horoscopes (and truthfully, always thought myself more of a Pisces), but still, I am heartbroken to discover this news. And then, to think my sister got herself a Pisces tattoo when she was in her late teens...Oh, wait, with the new breakdown, she's still a Pisces:  whew! Lucky her.
     Why was it released now? NBC states because of the earth's changing alignment, the dates of the zodiac signs have changed....I will have to check out the deal with Scorpio, though.
     According to ganeshaspeaks.com, a Capricorn is a workaholic (okay, I like to get the job done...but, I don't know if I'd call myself a "workaholic"...), cold and snobbish, lusty, and makes loyal friends (eh, not really on these...then again, I think I do appear to be cold and snobbish to people at times), is patient (not at all!), thin (I wish!), and have allergies (..well, maybe to lactose). These are just a few of the things Ganesha mentions in her (his?) details of a Capricorn. I don't really relate with these qualities. And I never liked the name, Capricorn. Blech!

Nor' Eastern In the Midwest

     And so our winter storm of a predicted 3-5 inches begins... This same storm is supposed to head out and hit New England by tomorrow afternoon...Boston is supposed to get a whopping 12-18 inches. So, here it comes, Boston! You saw it here first!

The first snowstorm in Ohio, 2011 begins...
      The picture above doesn't do the falling snow justice. It is really coming down...not by east coast standards, I'm sure, but it is a-comin'. Okay, why do I even bother posting a picture like this--pathetic to Maine standards? Because I want to! We are used to getting ice, so a snowstorm carrying a treat of a potential 1/2 foot is exciting!
     It is a day like today that I am happy to not have to go anywhere (except to the school bus stop to walk my son home this afternoon). I guess I should say I am grateful to not have to drive to a job in it. Whew!
